"To spearhead the development of Chinese medicine as a high value-added industry for Hong Kong through promotion and coordination of related activities and strategic support for scientific and evidence-based development programmes."

This will be achieved by:

• Formulation of strategies for the development of Chinese medicine (CM) in Hong Kong;
• Scientific development supporting CM standardization and value-added product development;
• Initiation, collaboration, co-ordination and management of R&D programmes and projects and promotion of commercialisation of R&D results;
• Partnership with the private sector to add value to CM based products through the enhancement of their safety, quality and efficacy and the promotion of Good Agricultural Practice (GAP), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP); and
• Information gathering and dissemination relating to local, Mainland and overseas R&D activities, regulatory requirements on CM based products in the major markets and related matters such as patent protection.
