Influenza A (H1N1) Patients Cured by Chinese Medicine

A patient with confirmed Influenza A (H1N1) virus infection was discharged from Guangdong Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine on 19 June 2009, fully recovered.  This was the first cured H1N1 case using Chinese medicine (CM) only, followed by another 13 successful cases from the same hospital in June. No western medication was taken in the entire treatment protocol for all the cases.

Although influenza A (H1N1) is identified as a new virus strain, it is still classified as a kind of “warm disease” from CM point of view.  CM practitioners have already accumulated extensive clinical experience in treating this type of disease. According to Prof. Lu Yubo, Dean of Guangdong Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, H1N1 symptoms resemble those of regular influenza. Based on TCM syndrome differentiation for that first case, a modified Yin Qiao San (Lonicera & Forsythia Formula) is prescribed at the initial stage to “disperse wind, discharge heat, diffuse the lung and drain dampness” (CM therapeutic terms).  Based on the progress of the disease prescribed Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum combination) will be prescribed with adaptation. Once the body temperature returns to normal, modified Shen Ling Bai Zhu San (Ginseng & Atractylodes Formula) will be used for late-phase treatment. CM has demonstrated efficacy in treating the influenza in different stages.

Prof Lu said, “CM, with its uniqueness and advantages, has long been used for treating influenza with effectiveness.  Extensive experience has been accumulated through clinical practice.” The Ministry of Health, PRC has incorporated CM therapy into influenza A treatment protocol, emphasizing its importance in prevention and therapeutic treatments. Besides, Department of Health of Guangdong province has disseminated the “Guangdong Province Influenza A (H1N1) Prevention Protocol using CM (2009 edition)”.  With reference to the climate, the eight CM constitutions of human body and accumulative experience, the authority has recommended several CM formulae for interfering viral infection and boosting immunity. For patients with confirmed influenza A (H1N1) infection, CM therapy will be administered according to CM principles.
