Multi-Dimensional Fingerprints for QC of Chinese Materia Medica

Fingerprinting could be deployed to capture the variety and quantity of components of Chinese Materia Medica (CMM) and their preparations, hence supporting quality assessment of CMM and CM-based products.  Chromatographic fingerprinting, best known for its high sensitivity and wide applicability, has been commonly used in quality control of Chinese medicine. However, it is also associated with complicated procedures, relatively long analytical time, low specificity and strong interference.

With collaborative research efforts among Chang Chun Institute of Applied Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jilin University and Special Product Research Institute of The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, multi-dimensional fingerprints of five CMM, namely Radix et Rhizoma Gentianae, Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis, Herba Epimedii, Radix Astragali, Radix Et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae have been established. Other research findings include 1) analysis of multiple chemical components in CMM by liquid chromatography and structural confirmation of main constituents by mass spectrometry (MS);  2) establishing analytical system for comparing MS fingerprints of the five CMM & their preparations; 3) differentiating origin, variety, harvesting period and growing years of CMM by MS fingerprint pattern recognition method; and 4) establishing near-infrared chemical fingerprint pattern recognition method for the five CMM.

This innovative multi-dimensional fingerprinting has the advantages of simplicity, speed, high specificity and sensitivity, and short analytical time. It is believed that this new technology would have a great significance in phylogenetic and authentication study of plant species, and could be used for quality assessment and control of Chinese medicine throughout cultivation, processing and new drug R&D.
