Lianhua Qingwen Capsules for Influenza A (H1N1)

International Scientific Symposium on Influenza A (H1N1) Pandemic Response and Preparedness was jointly organized by the Ministry of Health, World Health Organization and The Lancet (a medical journal) on 21 Aug 2009. Yiling Pharmaceutical Group presented its research findings of Lianhua Qingwen Capsules (LQC) for the prevention and treatment of influenza A (H1N1) at the symposium. In comparison with the currently used drug Tamiflu, LQC antagonizes influenza A virus with comparable virus clearance ability, better average antipyretic time and cheaper therapeutic cost.

It is believed TCM possessing antipyretic, anti-inflammation, anti-viral as well as immunity boosting properties could act on multiple targets and provide overall regulatory effects which would be more superior to a single antiviral drug. TCM, supported with scientific evidence, indeed plays a crucial role in influenza pandemic response and preparedness, and the public health.

Lianhua Qingwen Capsules is a patented innovative TCM, its main ingredients include Fructus Forsythiae, Flos Lonicerae Japonicae, Herba Ephedrae, Semen Armeniacae Amarum, Gypsum, Radix Isatidis, Rhizoma Dryopteridid Crassirhizomatis, Herba Houttuyniae, Herba Pogostemonis, Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, Radix et Rhizoma Rhodiolae Crenulatae, Mentholum, Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae which function to diffuse lung & discharge heat, and clear plague & detoxify toxin. Therapeutic indices of experimental groups pre-/co-/post-treated with LQC were one-fold better than those of tamiflu-treated groups. In a randomized clinical trial of 66 influenza A confirmed cases, there was statistical significance on the average antipyretic time between LQC-treated group (2.13 days) and tamiflu-treated group (2.80 days) while the average hospitalization time was comparable between LQC-treated group (4.35 days) and tamiflu-treated group (4.60 days). Besides, LQC-treated group showed better alleviation of symptoms like sore throat, cough and sputum than tamiflu-treated group.

In pharmacology studies, LQC was shown to possess anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-pyreitc, anti-tussive, anti-phlegmatic, and immunity regulatory effects which disrupt multiple pathological vicious cycle and attain holistic therapy. Besides, LQC has exhibited strong inhibitory effects against Influenza A3, Human Parainfluenza Viruses (HPIVs) and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). It also suppresses the growth of Adenovirus 3 (ADV3) & ADV7, Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV1) &HSV2 and Influenza H3N2. LQC was listed in recommendation for treating avian flu in 2005 and for treating influenza H1N1 in 2009 by the Ministry of Health.
