China’s Top 10 TCM News in 2009

The State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM), in collaboration with Chinese News of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CNTCM), published “2009 China’s Top 10 Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) News” on January 30, 2010.  Vice-Minister of Health cum Director-General of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine Mr. Wang Guoqiang attended the press conference and delivered a speech.  The top 10 news were jointly chosen by SATCM, the media, Chinese Medicine (CM) associations and CM experts.  They were selected from the major news reported by the media in 2009 based on their impact on the development of TCM.  These are:

1. State Council issued guidelines on supporting and advancing traditional Chinese medicine development.  A total of RMB4.7 Billion was invested by the central government and the CM management system was further enhanced. 
2. Chinese medicine was included in the national medical reform.  Corresponding policies were published to encourage the use of CM.
3. CM demonstrated unique advantages and efficacy in treating H1N1 influenza.  2/3 of H1N1 patients nationwide were treated either by CM alone or integrative medication.   
4. 30 TCM doctors were awarded the title "TCM Master" by the Government. 
5. "Promotion of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China” Programme was extended to the army.  CM medical service was made available to military officers for the first time.  CM education and promotion were getting broader recognition and achieved better results.
6. CM industry launched vocational qualification accreditation scheme for 5 CM-related occupations, including CM Gua Sha Therapist, CM Dispenser, CM Herbs Growers, CM Processsing Technician and CM QC Inspector.
7. TCM specialists and medicine apprentices trained by master practitioners were exempted from western medicine examinations according to CM Practitioners Examination Syllabus 2009.
8. The incident of Shuanghuanglian injectable aroused public concerns on drug safety.  State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) launched the safety re-evaluation of CM injectables to raise safety, efficacy and quality. 
9. 16 National CM Clinical Research Base were set up.  10 CM R&D Projects were awarded 2009 State Science and Technology Awards, the best result in 10 years.
10. Initiated by China, “the Declaration on Traditional Medicine” was adopted by WHO meeting.  China and 10 ASEAN countries proclaimed a “Nanning Declaration” and reached common view for traditional medical cooperation.  The first CM international education standard based on Chinese standards was published, confirming China’s leading role in traditional medicine.
