Hong Kong Jockey Club Institute of Chinese Medicine (HKJCICM) has been dedicated to the overall development of Chinese medicine ever since its establishment in 2001, and the exchange of information on Chinese medicine is one of its focuses.
Encyclopedia on Contemporary Medicinal Plants has 4 volumes in total, with 2 covering eastern plants (Volume 1 and Volume 2), and the other 2 covering western plants (Volume 3) and plants in South China (Volume 4). The Encyclopedia contains traditional medicinal plants used in different medical systems. It is both a summary of traditional experience and collection of new findings, covering over 800 varieties of commonly used medicinal plants around the world, including those potential applications as natural products, cosmetics and pigments etc. Contents include ancient and contemporary research, chemical ingredients, information on safe use of pharmacological properties, pictures of original and processed plants, clinical application and comments on future development. The traditional and simplified Chinese versions of Volumes 3 and 4 are published this year and the English version of Volumes 1-4 tentatively in 2008 for facilitating international communication and exchange.
Prodigious in contents and practical for use, the Encyclopedia is a handy reference for those with interest in medical education, scientific research, production, quality control, product development and trading of medicines.
