The third meeting of the Mainland-Hong Kong Science and Technology Co-operation Committee was held in Beijing
Since its establishment in 2004 by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST) and the Commerce, Industry & Technology Bureau of Hong Kong (CITB), the Mainland-Hong Kong Science and Technology Cooperation Committee is committed to promoting the economic growth in the region by strengthening science and technology co-operation between the Mainland and Hong Kong. On 16 April 2007, the third meeting of the Mainland-Hong Kong Science and Technology Co-operation Committee was held in Beijing and attended by some 50 representatives from the MOST, CITB, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Chinese Academy of Science, Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, Science and Technology Commission of Guangdong Province, HKJCICM and 5 other Hong Kong R&D Centers of Hong Kong.
Chairmen of the Mainland and Hong Kong parties both said at the meeting that Hong Kong and the Mainland have their respective advantages in science and technology, and that both parties shall complement each other with their strengths and join hands in building China into an innovation-based country.
Co-operation between Hong Kong and the Mainland will enhance the interaction between research institutions and industries
As one of the earlier industries for Hong Kong-Mainland co-operation, Chinese medicine has witnessed new progress. In addition to the joint survey conducted on Hong Kong-Mainland Chinese medicine research and training, the priority co-operation projects proposed by the Chinese medicine working group – (Study on Quality and Safety of Chinese Medicines and Study on Chinese Medicines’ Curative Effects in Treating Malignant Diseases) – have been included in the science and technology supporting scheme of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan. In respect of issues involving policies, the State Key Laboratories was discussed at the conference and Hong Kong’s universities will be invited to join the State Key Laboratories Program.
Just one month after the conference, one of the major activities proposed by the Committee—a forum with the theme “Working together to build an innovation-based country”— was successfully held. The forum brought together experts and scholars from the four regions across the Straits who discussed our country’s innovation strategies and system, Hong Kong’s role in the new circumstances, how to further promote regional and international science and technology co-operation and other major topics. In addition, Hong Kong and Shenzhen governments signed a co-operation agreement on “Shenzhen-Hong Kong Innovation Circle”. The third summit forum of “Shenzhen-Hong Kong Innovation Circle” was held in Shenzhen where innovation strategies of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan were vigorously discussed and echoed. Science and technology co-operation between Hong Kong and Shenzhen will strengthen the interaction between research institutions and industries, which not only help Hong Kong in its economic transformation but add new vitality to its future economic development.
