The 6th Oxford International Conference on the Science of Botanicals (ICSB)
The 6th Oxford International Conference on the Science of Botanicals (ICSB), co-sponsored by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica under Chinese Academy of Sciences, was held in Oxford, Mississippi, the US from 30 April – 3 May 2007. Officials of FDA, Mississippi College and the US National Institute of Health (NIH) attended the conference and delivered keynote speeches. Other representatives present at the conference, a total of around 150, included experts and scholars of medicine encyclopedia committees from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Germany, Canada, Britain, India, US and other countries and regions as well as officials of related state drug administrations.
Invited by the organizing committee, Dr. Xu Hong-Xi, Kevin, Deputy Director of Hong Kong Jockey Club Institute of Chinese Medicine (HKJCICM) attended the conference. He briefed the audience about the overall R&D in Hong Kong and made a detailed introduction about the projects funded by HKJCICM, their progress and results. With the theme of “Preclinical Evaluation of Botanicals”, this conference primarily covered the registration regulations on botanicals, standardized cultivation, quality criteria and control of medicine, studies on pharmacology and toxicology, extraction, separation, identification and filtration of effective ingredients and preclinical evaluation. Dr Xu and guests attending the conference conducted profound discussion on problems existing in preclinical evaluation of botanicals, R&D strategies, and direction of development and prospect. This conference fully reflected the importance attached by governments around the world and related research institutions to traditional medicine and botanicals study and provided a co-operative opportunity for researchers across the world.
