From Chinese Medicine Research to Application …Charging Ahead!

Our R&D portfolio embraces technology platform for authentication and betterment of quality control of CM using chemical and DNA technologies, development of medicines for promotion of human health and treatment of illnesses, and publications (e.g. the Encyclopedia of Contemporary Medicinal Plants).
Through the first-rate efforts of our R&D partners at universities and my team, I am delighted to report that HKJCICM is making steadfast progress towards value-added development of CM.

Latest R&D milestones include “being the first” for a Hong Kong research-based organisation to receive an approval from the China State Food and Drug Administration to initiate clinical research on an improved CM-based formulation for treating myocardial ischemia/angina associated with cardiovascular disorders. Recently, we also reported promising scientific and clinical evidence from a traditional CM formulation for treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome. As a common disorder, there is no effective remedy in conventional medicine. Research has demonstrated the value of the integrative western and Chinese medicine approach and paved the way for the use of CM to meet unmet medical needs in modern clinical setting.

Through these two projects and others funded by HKJCICM, we have gained invaluable experience through different CM R&D approaches across science and evidence-based developments for betterment of human health and promotion to facilitate applications.

As we move on, we will proactively engage with the CM sector through (i) exchange and disseminating sector-relevant research and market information; (ii) upgrading industrial practices and strengthening quality control of CMs through technical developments; and (iii) generating intellectual properties and fostering their industrial and clinical applications.

I, on behalf of all at the HKJCICM, would like to express our gratitude to policy makers, our broad networks of advisors, business and technology partners, and industrial practitioners for their advice and continued support. Through the collective efforts, we have also witnessed tremendous CM developments from regulatory, education, R&D to industrialisation in Hong Kong. With the challenges ahead, we welcome your opinions and views on how HKJCICM could further value-added sector developments.

In this festive occasion when the community in Hong Kong is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, I would like to wish all of you good health and a prosperous future.
