The Vigorous Development of
Folk Hospitals & Chinese Medicine in Beijing
According to Beijing Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Beijing has absorbed the cultures as well as medicinal traditions of most the ethnic groups in China. The folk hospitals within the city include Beijing Tibetan Medicine Hospital (Beijing Minzu Hospital), Beijing Muslim Hospital and Beijing De Kun Yao Hospital, forming the network for the ethnic medical treatment in Beijing. Beijing also supports the third-level Chinese medicine hospitals in setting up the department of folk medicine, exploring the experience and channel of Chinese medicine hospitals in setting up the department of folk medicine and providing folk medical service.
27 folk departments assembling in Beijing
East Hospital affiliated to Beijing University of Chinese Medicine has set up the department of folk medicine. Through the sharing of resources between Chinese medicine and folk medical treatment and complementarity of each other, the medical treatment and service relating to folk medicine are enhanced. Among the four medical institutes with folk medical treatment, there are over 30 consultation rooms for folk medicine, and one of these consultation rooms is for specialist treatment of the state-level folk medicine, and one is for specialist treatment of Beijing folk medicine. There are 27 major folk medicine departments including Tibetan medicine, Meng medicine, Zhuang medicine, Tujia zu medicine, Hui medicine, Yi medicine and Yao medicine.
The folk medicine in Beijing grows rapidly; the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine of Beijing Tibetan Medicine Hospital has been listed as the major department in the nation’s folk medicine. After several years’ construction, progress has been made in all areas of work, for instance, rehabilitation equipment has been purchased, specialist team construction in folk medicine has been strengthened, and the convention of diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in the Hospital has been formulated. As such, a team of talents in Tibetan medicine has been cultivated. The department of Erythematosus of Beijing De Kun Yao Hospital has been listed as one of the major construction units in Beijing’s Chinese medicine with speedy development over the past years.
Two folk medicine research institutes in Beijing
There are already two folk medicine research institutes in Beijing namely Beijing Tibetan Medicine Research Centre and De Kun Yao Medicine Research Institute. In the Xuanwu District, the Beijing’s Muslim folk medicine research group has also been established in the Muslim Research Institute, ascribing Beijing’s Tibetan medicine, Muslim medicine and Yao medicine with a theoretical and systematic compilation and research. Published works and books include Research on Tibetan Medicine Modernization, Complete Works of Tibetan Medicine Prescriptions, An Illustrated Tibetan Medical Macrobiotics, Collected Papers on the Tibetan Medicine Research, A Brief History of Beijing Muslim Medicine Development and Yao Medicine. These works and books have documented the discovery and compilation work of folk medicine in Beijing.
Currently, there are more than 30 ethnic groups that have compiled work on their own traditional medicine. However, owing to different historical conditions and cultural background, the traditional medicine development for each group various in progress. Some groups have set up a rather complete medical system; some are in the progress of compiling, standardising and refining the theories of the system; some are left with fragmented and incomplete formulary medical. On the whole, there is a lack of standardization and technical standards in relation to folk medicine system like folk medicine diagnosis and treatment standards.
