Development of Chinese Medicine Clinics in Hong Kong
Chinese medicine is an integral part of the Chinese culture. With over 95 percent of its population as Chinese ancestry, Hong Kong has a long history of using Chinese medicine, and Chinese traditional treatment has enjoyed a great popularity. TWGHs Tung Wah Hospital has been providing Chinese Medicine (CM) services to the public since its establishment in 1872. In 1942, under Japanese occupation, Chinese herbs were in short supply, while at the same time the Japanese Authority told the hospital to stop all CM services. As a result, only limited western medical services were provided to inpatients. After the war, only CM outpatient services were resumed. After 1997, to be in line with the Chinese Medicine policy advocated by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), TWGHs and other hospitals initiated a number of projects aiming at enhancing the CM services, including the establishment of public Chinese Medicine Clinics (CMCs).
At present, about 22% of the medical consultations in Hong Kong are currently provided by Chinese medicine practitioners. The number of public CMCs currently in Hong Kong is NINE. Below are their service details:
