First Anti-tumor Chinese Medicine Clinic cum
Training and Research Centre in Hong Kong

As integrative Chinese-Western medicine treatment has become a development trend in Hong Kong, the first Chinese Medicine clinic cum Training and Research Centre under the Hospital Authority (HA) with speciality in oncology was inaugurated in  March 2007 to growing patients needs.

Chinese Medicine: Into Every Treatment
Liu Yu Long, a professor-rank Chinese medicine practitioner at the Guangdong Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and chief Chinese medicine practitioner of the Clinic said, western medicine primarily relies on surgical operations, chemotherapy and radiotherapy to fight against cancer. With years’of relevant research, Liu Yu Long believes Chinese and western medicines can join hands to provide better medical treatments for cancer patients although some consider it unadvisable for patients undergoing chemotherapy to take Chinese medicine. Regardless of cancer types or developing stages, if patients accept it, Chinese medical treatment could reduce toxic effects of cancer cells or side-effects of western medical treatment such as vomiting, diarrhea and poor appetite. It may be the principal treatment on terminal cancers, particularly for patients unsuitable for surgical operation or chemotherapy, he said. Yet, he pointed out that according to relevant Chinese medicine practicing guidelines, Chinese medicine practitioners will advise patients of emergent, critical or serious status first seek western medical diagnosis. For instance, patients with paroxysmal hypertension or asthma shall as far as possible receive western emergency rescue first. The clinic, specialized in oncology, accept general patients as well. According to the Center, outpatient and acupuncture fees are HK$ 120 and HK$ 150, respectively, general and cancer patients alike. The Center also provides decoction preparation service for patients.
