Promotion of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China
- Hong Kong Programme
The nation-wide educational and publicity campaign “Promotion of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China” kicked off its Hong Kong Programme on 24 November 2007. Vice-Minister of Health and Director-General of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM), Dr Wang Guoqiang, and the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow officiated at the launching ceremony in Hong Kong. The nation-wide campaign was jointly organized by SATCM and 16 other mainland government bodies with the theme "Inheriting and promoting the fine tradition of Chinese medicine and culture, sharing good health in harmony". A variety of activities will be held to showcase the history of Chinese medicine, its unique consultation methodology and efficacy and the scientific theory in medical application.
The Hong Kong programme is coordinated by Food and Health Bureau and Department of Health, HKSAR in collaboration with SATCM. All activities are non-profit-making and will be provided free to members of the public or the Chinese medicine sector. Being selected as one of the host cities and included in the campaign's first year of activities gives local CM sector an opportunity to gear up its professionalism and expertise through exchanges and to further promote Chinese medicine in the community. The programme will last until 31 December 2007.
Highlight activities of Hong Kong programme include the launching ceremony, free consultation by Chinese medicine practitioners, visits to elderly homes, symposiums and seminars such as ‘Symposium on global development in Chinese medicine’ as well as ‘China-Hong Kong heart-to-heart carnival on Chinese medicines’. In addition, Radio/TV broadcasts featuring Chinese medicine will be aired, along with road shows and live performances to enable the local community to gain a better understanding on Chinese medicine.
Dr. Gloria Tam, the Deputy Director of Health has been appointed the chairman of the event's organizing committee. As one of the key players in the local CM scene, Hong Kong Jockey Club Institute of Chinese Medicine (HKJCICM) is one of the supporting organizations. Dr. Edmund Lee, Executive Director of HKJCICM, gave a presentation on “R&D of Modernized Chinese Medicines” at the ‘Symposium on global development in Chinese medicine’ organized by Hong Kong Hospital Authority. In addition, HKJCICM is also co-organizing with Hong Kong Trade Development Council a Chinese Medicine Industry Symposium titled “Effective Business Strategies for Commercialization of R&D Deliverables” at the 2007 Inno Design Tech Expo on 12 December 2007.
