The Executive Director, Dr Edmund Lee, was invited by the British Consul-General to attend a Luncheon discussion with Lord Warner, Parliamentary under Secretary of States for Health, United Kingdom, on 11 June. The parties exchanged views on government policies and developments associated with health, science and technology, particularly in areas relating to biotechnology. They also considered that collaborative opportunities prevail in furthering the research upon the safety, quality and effectiveness of Chinese medicine.

Dr Xu Hong Xi and Mr Andrew Cheng had a meeting with Mr Fang Ming Yu, Director of Guangzhou Drug Administration and Dr Jiang Yi Qiao, Vice Director of Guangzhou Municipal Institute for Drug Control on 19 January to discuss the registration of proprietary Chinese medicines in Hong Kong and the relevant testing issues in various Institutes for Drug Control in the Mainland.

Dr Xu Hong Xi and Mr Andrew Cheng had a meeting with Mr Men Sheng, Director of Chengdu Municipal Science Technology Bureau and Intellectual Property Office on 16 January to discuss the issues related to the 2004 International Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Exposition.

The Executive Director, Dr Edmund Lee, was interviewed by Nature Biotechnology for a news feature on the global trend on traditional Chinese medicine development on 24 December.

The Executive Director, Dr Edmund Lee, attended the first meeting of the Programme Committee of the International Conference and Exhibition of the Modernisation of Chinese Medicine and Health Products (ICMCM) 2004 on 19 December. HKJCICM is one of the co-organisers.

Dr Xu Hong Xi, spoke on “GAP Development and R&D of Chinese Medicine in Hong Kong” at the International Conference on Modernisation of Chinese Medicine Industry in Southern China cum Second Council Meeting of GAP Association for Chinese Medicinal Materials held in Haikou on 18-20 December. The activity was co-organised by Hainan Provincial Government and GAP Association for Chinese Medicinal Materials ( Hong Kong ).

The second CMED seminar titled “The Strategies on Research and Development of New Chinese Medicine” by Prof. Tu Peng Fei from Peking University Modern Research Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine, was held at Rm EF305 Chan Sui Wai Building, HKPolyU on 16 December 2003.

On matters relating to Chinese medicine development under CEPA and healthcare development, the Executive Director, Dr Edmund Lee , was interviewed by Cable TV and a Singaporean consulting firm on 8 and 9 December respectively.

The first CMED seminar titled “Studies on the Diterpenoids of Isodon Species” by Prof. Sun Han Dong from Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was held at the conference room of Institute of Chinese medicine, CUHK on 3 December 2003.

The Executive Director, Dr Edmund Lee, spoke at the first World Congress of Chinese Medicine on 21-24 November in Australia. The Congress was organised by the RMIT University, Australia.

The Executive Director, Dr Edmund Lee, attended a business luncheon with Lord Sainsbury of Turville, Minister for Science and Innovation on 14 October.

The Executive Director, Dr Edmund Lee, spoke at the MCMIA Lecture Series targeting executives of Chinese medicine enterprises in Q4 2003. The event, funded by the SME Development Fund administered by the Trade and Industry Department, was organised by MCMIA and the Hong Kong Productivity Council.
