From the Chairman, Board of Directors

Mr Yu Kwok-chun , SBS, JP

Chinese medicine, with its thousands of years of cultural heritage, presents us with unmatched opportunities for research, as well as product and business development in the health food and pharmaceutical industries.

We are set up as a subsidiary of the Government-owned Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Co. Ltd. to steer, co-ordinate and strengthen the modernisation and further development of Chinese medicine. This website introduces our organisation and scope of work.

By calling on resources and knowledge from Hong Kong , the Mainland and abroad, we provide a strategic platform to co-ordinate activities and support the advancement of this industry. To support sustainable development, we will strengthen, through our portfolio of projects and activities, research on traditional use and evidence base of Chinese medicine, exchange of research and industry relevant information, protection of intellectual properties and our abilities to meet evolving regulatory requirements.

Stepping into the future brings uncertainties and opportunities. There are immense challenges ahead and we look forward to working closely with you.

From the Deputy Chairman, Board of Directors

Dr Lawrence T Wong

In 2001, the Hong Kong Jockey Club pledged to donate HK$500 million (US$64 million) to support the policy initiative of Hong Kong SAR Government towards the research and development of Chinese medicine. The partnership with the Government has led to the formation of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Institute of Chinese Medicine Limited.

With its prime focus in ageing and global medical concerns, the Institute's work programmes are geared towards the promotion of human health through enhancing the science and evidence base of Chinese medicine, and commercialisation of research outputs. The Hong Kong Jockey Club is delighted to be part of the strategic platform to support the Institute in these worthy areas of development.

The Institute aims to strengthen systematic investigation and quality control of Chinese medicine. It will also foster exchanges and dissemination of high quality information to support research and industry development.

With the emergence of a new business environment within the evolving regulatory framework on traditional Chinese medicine, research and business opportunities abound. We look forward to your support in making this endeavour a success.
